Creating Opportunity in Communities
At GWAM, we are more than charity. We are helping communities to become more stable by providing clean water, jobs, and training for individuals and families—all to God’s glory.
The Problem
According to the latest estimates of UNICEF’s Monitoring Program for Water Supply and Sanitation, 32% of the world’s population or 2.4 billion people are lacking toilet facilities, and 663 million people still used unimproved drinking water sources in 2015. Inadequate access to safe water and sanitation services, coupled with poor hygiene practices, kills and sickens thousands of children every day and leads to impoverishment and diminished opportunities for thousands more. Poor sanitation, water, and hygiene have many other serious effects.
Children, particularly girls, are denied their right to education because their schools lack private and decent sanitation facilities. Women are forced to spend large parts of their day fetching water. Poor farmers and wage earners are less productive due to illness; health systems are overwhelmed, and national economies suffer.
Creating Solutions
At GWAM, in partnership with UNICEF and RWDP, our overall mission is committed to improving the quality of life in rural communities. This is accomplished by providing sustainable (ongoing) safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, and services using educational approaches and evangelism. Our core basic principles are that we are Christians, committed to helping the poor, and believe in people.
Focus Accomplishments
The water program has been able to drill over 1100 wet wells fitted with hand pumps in nine country regions. We have repaired 545 broken-down wells in the Northern and Brong Ahafo Regions of Ghana. We have established and trained over 1,300 Water Sanitation Committees, disinfected 5,600 contaminated water points in 1,500 communities, trained 120 area pump mechanics.
Continued Success
The most wonderful part about the accomplishments in northern Ghana is that it was all to the glory of God—and you as a supporter share a partnership in the success. When we all begin to work together toward a common goal, people are served, and the gospel moves forward.
The apostle Paul says in Philippians 2:2, “Complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.“ In context, Paul seems to be saying here, let us all work toward that same goal of advancing the gospel in a way that glorifies Christ by not only caring for ourselves but also caring for the interest of others.
